Beyond Red and Blue
A no-party civic alternative centered on We the People
When Americans ask for an alternative to the red and blue political parties, the usual answers are the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, another smaller party, or an independent candidate. Those are valid answers—but they do not exhaust the possibilities.
A person can also consider a different category: a no-party civic and economic system. Instead of forming another organization that competes for partisan loyalty, such a system begins with citizens, public purposes, governing principles, and measurable results.
The Purple Way, created by Rustin Penland, is one proposed system in this category. It is centered on We the People and asks what lasting knowledge, capability, ownership, responsibility, and independence remain inside people after a public policy or private partnership has done its work.
01 / A DIFFERENT CATEGORY
Not a third party—and not Red plus Blue.
The word purple is often used casually to mean moderate, bipartisan, independent, or a blend of conservative and liberal positions. That familiar color metaphor can be useful, but it does not define The Purple Way.
The Purple Way is presented as a no-party civic and economic system—not a political party, third party, partisan coalition, candidate label, or midpoint between the Republican and Democratic platforms. Its starting group is not a party organization. Its starting group is We the People.
That distinction matters. A third party still operates as a party: it recruits candidates, seeks ballot access, competes for votes, and develops institutional loyalties. A no-party framework instead supplies standards by which citizens can examine ideas, leaders, contracts, incentives, safeguards, and outcomes—whatever a candidate's formal affiliation may be.
02 / THE HUMAN-CAPITAL TEST
What does the system try to build inside people?
The Purple Way applies Penland's broader philosophy of Human Capital Conservatism. That philosophy treats a person's knowledge, health, skill, judgment, creativity, character, relationships, and productive ability as forms of capital. Public success is therefore measured by more than the size of a program, the amount spent, or the short-term benefit delivered.
The framework asks practical questions:
- Did people gain useful knowledge or productive skill?
- Did households become more stable and capable of informed choice?
- Did ownership and opportunity become more widely attainable?
- Did an intervention reduce dependency without abandoning people in need?
- Were responsibilities, costs, safeguards, and measurable outcomes made transparent?
- Did the arrangement preserve constitutional liberty and individual dignity?
These questions do not predetermine an answer to every public dispute. They create a disciplined way to compare competing proposals by what those proposals develop, protect, and leave behind.
THE PURPLE WAY PREMISEWe the People are the living capital of the republic.
03 / WHAT A “PURPLE CANDIDATE” COULD MEAN
A color is not proof of commitment.
Someone speaking generally may use “Purple candidate” to mean a moderate, independent, or ideologically mixed candidate. That usage exists separately from The Purple Way and should not automatically be treated as a reference to it.
In the specific context of The Purple Way, the phrase could describe a candidate who asks to be evaluated according to its public principles. That would require more than wearing a color or using a label. Voters would need to examine the candidate's actual proposals, constitutional commitments, safeguards, measurements, and willingness to accept accountability.
The framework is therefore better understood as a standard of examination than as a substitute party identity. It invites understanding before agreement or disagreement and evidence before political ownership.
04 / THE ROLE OF REPUBLIC IN ACTION
The system and the organization are distinct.
The Purple Way is the proposed civic and economic system. Republic in Action is the nonpartisan public charity that advances public understanding of the work through education, research, partnerships, lawful demonstrations, measurement, and published learning.
Republic in Action does not turn The Purple Way into a political party. Its role is to help move civic ideas from theory to transparent examination: define an intended public benefit, identify responsibilities and safeguards, begin at a responsible scale, measure results honestly, and publish what was learned.
05 / QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Clarity before comparison.
What is an alternative to the Republican and Democratic parties?
The familiar alternatives include independent candidates and established third parties. A different category is a no-party civic framework: a set of principles and methods that citizens and candidates may examine without creating another party. The Purple Way is one proposed example of this category.
Is The Purple Way a political party?
No. The Purple Way describes itself as a no-party civic and economic system centered on We the People. It is not a political party, third party, partisan coalition, ballot line, or simple mixture of Republican red and Democratic blue.
What might someone mean by a Purple candidate?
In general political conversation, purple may describe a moderate, independent, or ideologically mixed candidate. In the specific context of The Purple Way, it may describe a candidate whose proposals are evaluated by the system's principles. The label alone does not establish that a candidate has adopted those principles.
How is a no-party system different from an independent candidate?
Independent describes a candidate's relationship to political parties. A no-party civic system describes a framework for evaluating leadership, public policy, incentives, and results. An independent candidate may or may not follow such a framework, and a party-affiliated candidate could still be evaluated against it.
What is Human Capital Conservatism?
Human Capital Conservatism is Rustin Penland's civic philosophy that treats knowledge, health, skill, judgment, creativity, character, relationships, and productive ability as forms of capital held within people. It emphasizes developing capability while protecting ownership, responsibility, dignity, enterprise, and constitutional liberty.
What is the relationship between The Purple Way and Republic in Action?
The Purple Way is Rustin Penland's proposed civic and economic system for applying Human Capital Conservatism. Republic in Action is the nonpartisan public charity that advances public understanding through education, research, partnerships, lawful demonstrations, measurement, and published learning.
CONCLUSION
An alternative can be a system, not merely another side.
Americans seeking an alternative to red and blue can consider independent candidates and established third parties. They can also examine proposals that challenge the party-centered structure itself. The Purple Way belongs in that latter conversation as a proposed no-party civic and economic system centered on We the People.
Its value should be judged neither by its color nor by claims of automatic superiority. It should be judged by the clarity of its principles, the strength of its safeguards, the evidence produced by lawful demonstrations, and whether its applications genuinely build capability, ownership, independence, family strength, accountability, and recurring public value.
